Your guide to fixing loose tiles

Start by gently prying up the loose tile. Use a putty knife or a scraper to lift the tile flooring from the adhesive. Be careful not to damage the tile, especially if you plan to reuse it. If the tile won’t come off easily, you can tap the handle of the putty knife with a rubber mallet to loosen it. Once the tile is removed, take a look at the adhesive or thin-set mortar underneath. If it's still intact, you can reuse it, but if it’s crumbled or missing, you’ll need to apply fresh adhesive.

Prepare the surface

Once the tile is removed, check the surface underneath. It should be clean and free from any debris. Use a utility knife to scrape away any old adhesive, grout, or dirt that might prevent the new adhesive from sticking. If there’s any damage to the subfloor, it’s important to repair it now before proceeding. If the subfloor is wood, make sure it's dry and level.

You can also clean the back of the tile to ensure a good bond with the new adhesive. If you’re reusing the old tile, make sure it’s free from any old mortar or grout, as this can prevent a proper seal.

Apply new adhesive

Now it’s time to apply fresh adhesive. Use a notched trowel to spread a layer of adhesive on the subfloor, making sure to cover the entire area where the tile will sit. Be sure to use the correct type of adhesive for the tile material—some tiles, like porcelain, require special adhesive.

Once the adhesive is applied, press the tile back into place. You can gently tap it down with a rubber mallet to ensure it's seated properly. If necessary, use tile spacers to keep the tiles aligned correctly, especially if the loose tile is near other tiles.

Grout the tile

After the adhesive has set, it’s time to grout. Use a rubber float to apply grout around the edges of the tile, filling in the spaces between tiles. Be sure to wipe away any excess grout with a damp sponge before it hardens. Let the grout cure for 24 hours, ensuring that it sets properly before you walk on the tiles.

Final touch-ups

Once the grout has dried, check for any remaining grout haze on the tile surface. If you see any, use a soft cloth to buff it off. Your tile should now be securely in place, with a clean, smooth surface.

When to call a professional

If you’re dealing with extensive damage to the tile or subfloor, or if you’re unsure about your ability to fix the loose tile yourself, it’s always a good idea to call a professional. An expert can assess the situation and ensure the repair is done correctly, preventing future issues.
